Travis Issac McLaughlin (1971 - 2002)
Travis was a human dynamo. He was a powerhouse on the drums and in life. From the 1990s through the early 2000s, he was a solid presence in the Norman, OK music scene playing with the bands Tumble and Klipspringer. among others.
Travo, as we called him, always had a bounce in his step, a big grin on his face, and a funny quip ready to fly. He could frequently be seen driving around town in his 1973 Ford Ranchero (which he named Rufus T. Firefly), cranking some tunes with a Camel Wide cig hanging from his lips. When he was behind his drum kit, there was always a 2-liter of Diet Coke on one side and a 12-pack of Milwaukee's Best (the Beast) on the other. He loved playing music more than anything. He lived for it. He would've practiced and/or performed every night of the week, if his bandmates had been up for it.
Travis was an intelligent man. He knew something about almost every subject imaginable. Many nights after practice or gigs, were spent talking, debating, and discussing life's big and small questions into the wee hours of the morning. He enjoyed every minute of it. He enjoyed his friends.
Around 2001, he developed health problems that were eventually traced to a thyroid disorder. His doctors tried several variations and combinations of medications. Unfortunately, the medications didn't work. He took his own life on March 30, 2002. His friends and bandmates have never thought that's what he really wanted. His brain was so scrambled due to his thyroid being out of control, that a spur-of-the-moment decision ended everything.
He is still missed by the many who knew and loved him. We miss his smile, and the smiles he brought to our faces. We miss his incredible musicianship, his energy, and his friendship.
Here's to you, Travo. Cheers, mate.
